چکیده
HAIDINGER (1844) described ain entoptic phenomenon seen in plane polarized white light consisting of the appearance round the fixation point of yellow and blue " brushes " or " sheaves ", the yellowr brushes being pcarallel to the plane of polarization of the light. This appearance was the subject of much speculation during the following years, and several explanations for the phenonmenon were advanced; the explanation given by Helmholtz (1856) was generally accepted until it wxas quiestioned by Cogan (1941).

Macular sparing investigated by means of Haidinger brushes.
Haidinger brushes, an entoptic phenomenon perceived only through the most central macular retina, have been used in addition to kinetic and static perimetry with the Tubingen perimeter for determining macular sparing and splitting in hemianopic patients. Seven patients were examined: 2 with a bitemporal hemianopia resulting from traumatic damage to the optic chiasma, and 5 with a homonymous hem...
متن کاملPerception of Haidinger Brushes in Macular Disease Depends on Macular Pigment Density and Visual Acuity.
PURPOSE To optimize the perceptibility of Haidinger brushes (HB) and to investigate its association with visual acuity and macular pigment density. METHODS In this prospective cross-sectional study, each subject underwent best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) testing, funduscopy, and assessment of macular pigment optical density (MPOD) using the two-wavelength fundus autofluorescence method. Ha...
متن کاملThe macular pigment. II. Spatial distribution in primate retinas.
The spatial density distribution of macular pigment in primate retinas was described by two-wavelength microdensitometry of retinal sections. The macular pigment is most dense along the path of the receptor axons in the center of the fovea. Another band of high density is present in the inner plexiform layer in many retinas. The density in both fiber layers declines to low, relatively constant ...
متن کاملDetection of Polymer Brushes developed via Single Crystal Growth
Single crystals consisting various surface morphologies and epitaxial structures were applied to investigate the effect of other phase regions in the vicinity of a given tethered chains-covered area having a certain molecular weight of amorphous brushes. The designed experiments demonstrated that regardless of the type of surface morphology (patterned and especial mixed-brushes, homo and co...
متن کاملThe polarization sense in human vision
Unlike humans, numerous animals are differentially sensitive to the vector orientation of linearly polarized light. However as early as 1844 Haidinger noted that weak blue-yellow brushes appear, centered on the fovea, when the sky is observed through a slowly rotating polarizer. Different models have been proposed to try to understand this phenomenon, but the precise mechanism remains unknown a...
